PV Silver Recovery Equipment: The Complete Hydrometallurgy Line

PV Silver Recovery Equipment: Hydrometallurgy Line

Every decommissioned solar panel holds a small but remarkably valuable treasure: silver. Printed as fine conductive fingers on silicon cells, silver typically accounts for less than 0.1% of a panel’s weight — yet it can represent 10–15% of the total recoverable value of end-of-life photovoltaic modules. As global PV waste surges toward millions of tonnes by 2030, recovering that silver efficiently with a reliable PV silver recovery equipment has become the single biggest profit lever in solar recycling.

At WOLFU, we have developed a complete, experimentally verified PV silver recovery equipment covering everything from dissolving the silver in recovered monocrystalline silicon to final refining — together with the full set of silver extraction and refining.

The Feedstock: How Much Silver Is Actually in There?

After air-separation dismantling of whole single-glass PV panels, the numbers look like this:

ParameterValue
Weight of one single-glass panel~22–25 kg
Monocrystalline silicon recovered per panel~3.3 kg
Panels required per tonne of silicon~10 tonnes of whole panels
Silver content in monocrystalline silicon~2–3 kg per tonne (varies by panel manufacturer)

In other words, processing just 10 tonnes of dismantled single-glass panels puts roughly 2–3 kg of silver within reach of your leaching line — alongside a tonne of recoverable silicon that flows back to your silicon melting and recovery circuit.

The Hydrometallurgy PV silver recovery equipment: Step by Step

The following is the actual production process used in WOLFU’s PV silver recovery equipment.

1. Charging the Reaction Vessel

Dismantled silicon wafers are loaded into the reaction vessel.

2. Heated Dissolution with Stirring

The vessel heats the mixture under continuous stirring. Once the temperature rises to a certain degree and maintaines for a period of time, during which the silver in the silicon wafers dissolves completely into the nitric acid solution. Precise temperature control is the key engineering point here: too cool and dissolution stalls; too hot and acid losses and NOx generation climb.

3. Automatic Discharge & Solid–Liquid Separation

When the dissolution time is up, the discharge valve opens automatically, and the silicon wafers together with residue and liquid are discharged into the discharge trough. The trough is fitted with a funnel and filter cloth that separate the silicon wafers from the silver-bearing solution — the first solid–liquid cut.

4. Vacuum Filtration & Rinsing

A vacuum valve at the bottom of the discharge trough draws the silver solution out of the silicon wafer bed into the vacuum tank. The discharge trough has built-in filtering and cleaning functions, plus a spray device on its lid that rinses residual silver solution off the wafers — every gram of silver liquor that stays on the wafers is revenue walking out the door.

The rinsed silicon wafers exit as clean feedstock for silicon recovery and remelting.

5. Electrowinning

The silver solution in the vacuum tank is pumped into the storage tank connected to the electrowinning equipment, where metallic silver is extracted from solution by electrolysis. Silver at this stage reaches a purity of about 96%.

6. Closed-Loop Water & Acid Recycle

The water generated after electrowinning is returned to the reaction vessel to leach the next batch of silicon wafers. Water and acid are recycled repeatedly through the loop, cutting acid and water costs — a major operating expense in any hydrometallurgical plant.

7. Silver Refining to 99.99%

The extracted crude silver has a purity above 98%, and is further refined by electrolysis into 99.99% high-purity silver — ready for our gold & silver melting and refining production line and immediate sale at market price.

Environmental Compliance: Engineered In, Not Bolted On

Two systems make this PV silver recovery equipment licensable in strict markets:

  • Off-gas treatment: all waste gas and acid fumes generated during production are discharged in compliance with standards.
  • Zero wastewater discharge: excess wastewater generated during production achieves zero wastewater discharge — not just “treated discharge”, but none at all.

Fully Automated PLC Control

The whole PV silver recovery equipment runs under linked PLC control for automated production — dosing, heating, timing, discharge, filtration and transfer all execute automatically. This reduces labor costs and staffing risks, and more importantly, guarantees batch-to-batch consistency that manual operation cannot.

Why This PV Silver Recovery Equipment Economics Works

Put the full chain together and you see where the money is:

  1. Air-separation dismantling releases ~3.3 kg of silicon per panel
  2. Nitric acid leaching dissolves 2–3 kg of silver per tonne of silicon
  3. Electrowinning and refining deliver 99.99% pure silver
  4. Washed silicon returns to the silicon melting furnace
  5. Recovered copper feeds the copper rod continuous casting line

FAQ

Q: What silver purity can I sell?
A: Electrowinning yields ~96% silver, upgraded to above 98% crude silver, then electrolytically refined to 99.99% high-purity silver.

Q: Does the silver content vary between panels?
A: Yes — silver content runs roughly 2–3 kg per tonne of monocrystalline silicon, depending on the PV panel manufacturer. We can run lab-scale leaching tests on your actual feedstock to size the line and forecast output.

Q: What about wastewater of this PV silver recovery equipment?
A: Zero wastewater discharge. Off-gas — compliant discharge.
